Cairo & Giza
Overview
Cairo and Giza are two cities that sit side by side on the banks of the Nile in northern Egypt, forming one of the most historically rich and culturally alive urban areas on earth. Cairo, the capital, is a sprawling megacity where ancient Islamic architecture, buzzing bazaars, and modern life collide in a constant, electrifying chaos. Giza, just across the river to the southwest, is home to the last surviving wonder of the ancient world, the Great Pyramids, and has grown into a dense city in its own right. Together they form a destination unlike anywhere else: where you can stand at a 4,500-year-old pyramid in the morning and sip tea in a centuries-old coffeehouse by evening.
General Information & Facts
Cairo
Cairo was founded in 969 AD by the Fatimid dynasty and has grown into the largest city in both Africa and the Arab world, with a population of around 21 million people in the greater metro area. It sits at the northern tip of the Nile Delta, where the river begins to fan out before reaching the Mediterranean. The city's official language is Arabic, the currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP), and it operates on Eastern European Time (UTC+2). Known as "the City of a Thousand Minarets," Cairo has been a centre of Islamic culture and learning for over a thousand years, home to Al-Azhar β one of the oldest continuously operating universities in the world, founded in 970 AD.
Giza
Giza sits just southwest of Cairo on the west bank of the Nile, with a population of roughly 9 million. It is most famous for the Giza Pyramid Complex, built around 2560 BC during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu. The Great Pyramid of Khufu originally stood 146.5 metres tall, today it measures about 138 metres due to erosion and the loss of its outer casing stones. It was constructed using an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks, each weighing between 2.5 and 15 tonnes. For over 3,800 years it held the title of the tallest man-made structure on earth. The entire Giza Plateau, including the three main pyramids, the Great Sphinx, and several smaller satellite pyramids, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum, located near the plateau, is the largest archaeological museum in the world.
